Training for Facilitators for FAS Parent Classes

$695 includes course fee, 3 nights lodging at retreat center, 7 meals, facilitator guide and workbook. Early bird special $595 – paid registrations received by January 25, 2009.

This workshop provides basic information on Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD). Topics include cause, prevalence, how alcohol affects the developing brain, primary and secondary disabilities. Fee: $29, Co-sponsored by Lucas County Board of MRDD.

This workshop introduces participants to Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) with emphasis on the effects of prenatal alcohol exposure on the developing brain resulting in cognitive and behavioral difficulties. Participants will learn general strategies to support persons with FASD. Fee: $89
This presentation gives an overview of recently completed three-year intervention studies sponsored by the CDC. Fee: $35
NewFASD in Adolescents
Thursday, May 9, 2009, 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.
This workshop will cover the challenges of FASD during adolescence. Parents and professionals will learn strategies for helping young people with FASD negotiate their teen years. Fee: $35

Class Descriptions

Training for Facilitators for Triumph Through the Challenges of FAS Parent Classes
To offer these comprehensive classes on understanding and raising a child with FAS, facilitators can attend a 3 ˝ day training session to learn about FASD and facilitation techniques.  The curriculum includes complete, easy-to-follow lesson plans with transparencies or PowerPoint slides and parent workbooks with handouts and supplemental reading.

Triumph Through the Challenges of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Parent Classes
This six-week series of classes provides parents -birth, adoptive, foster, grandparents - the information and tools they need to effectively work with their child with FASD. Topics include:

  • Characteristics of FASD
  • Advocacy in the medical, school, judicial and social service arenas
  • Underlying causes of a child's inappropriate behavior
  • Environmental and safety issues
  • Recognizing indicators that signal disruptive behavior
  • Self-esteem, friend-making and social skills
  • Finding appropriate resources
  • Coping skills for living with a child with FAS/ARND

Triumph Through the Challenges of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Teacher Strategy Series
Students with FAS/ARND have unique needs that put them at risk for school failure. Understanding the child's challenges is key to selecting and using effective strategies. This series will help teachers - especially those in general education classrooms:

  • Understand the impact of FAS/ARND on the ability and behavior of a child
  • Generate and apply appropriate strategies addressing the issues surrounding educating a child with FAS/ARND
  • Use the information gained to make appropriate referrals

Materials will be provided for teachers to conduct this series at their own school. The series is designed  so any teacher in the group can facilitate the sessions. The 7 sessions can be scheduled over 7 to 14 weeks at the convenience of the participants.

FASD Awareness for School Professionals
In this 2-hour in-service teachers, administrators, paraprofessionals, psychologists, counselors, and nurses will learn the causes and characteristics of FASD and how to make a referral for diagnosis.
